Have you ever met someone that was the epitome of grace under pressure? Someone that magically managed to stay calm, poised, and collected no matter what life threw at them? Did you maybe secretly (or not so secretly) envy that person and think to yourself, “I could NEVER be like that!” 

Well, the truth is you CAN be like that or at least MORE like that. You too can be cool as a cucumber through all the ups and downs this roller coaster called “life” has to offer. The secret is shockingly simple. Are you ready for it? 

THE SECRET IS MEDITATION.  The secret is inner order, outer calm. Meditation gives you that.

Stay with me. I know there’s a 95% chance you just thought to yourself, “Nope. I can’t meditate. Rachael, I’ve tried. It’s impossible and boring. It’s not for me.” 

BUT … it IS for you. Meditation is for EVERYONE. Especially for those who are convinced they can’t do it.  And what is this “can’t” nonsense anyways? You are a unique and fabulous creature unlike any other and you can do anything you set your mind to. Let’s do this!

What is Meditation? 

Very simply stated, meditation is a practice that involves focusing your mind (on your breath, on an object, on a mantra, etc.).  Meditation is a practice that is THOUSANDS of years old and various forms of it come from different cultures all around the world. That said, modern science is just catching up with the very real benefits of meditation. 

5 AWESOME Benefits of Meditation

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans show that meditation has  positive impacts on our brains, and thus on our mental health. These scans prove that folks that meditate regularly actually have more and stronger connections between neurons in their brains in the areas that control their senses, concentration, and emotional processing. Translation – meditators have healthier brains!  Cool right?!?  5 awesome benefits of meditation include:

  1. Less symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. 
  2. Better ability to focus (calm that monkey mind!). 
  3. Improvement in dealing with emotional challenges. 

And since our mental health and physical health are so interconnected, mediation also provides physical benefits.

How to Start Meditating (and Get 5 Awesome Benefits of Meditation)

Candidly, there are a ton of different types of meditation techniques out there (and I absolutely encourage you to research and explore more of them on your own if you feel called to do so!). That said, let’s keep it SUPER simple to start.  

  • Make it a routine: pick a time you think you can commit to most days. 
  • Get comfortable: I suggest an easy seated position (laying down can lead to a nap instead of a meditation). 
  • Set a timer: start with 3 to 5 minutes (set a timer) and gradually consider working your way up to 10 minutes. 
  • Close your eyes: less to distract you that way. 
  • Focus on your breath: take note of every inhale and every exhale. Personally, I like to literally say to myself in my head, “This is my inhale, this is my exhale.”
    • When (notice I didn’t say “if”) your mind starts to wander/a stray thought not related to your breath pops up, don’t despair! This is completely NORMAL and not a big deal.  Just acknowledge the wayward thought and direct your attention back to your breath. This will happen several times – and way more often than you imagine – during the 3 to 5 minutes, especially when you are starting out. So don’t worry about it! It gets easier with time and practice. 
  • and that’s it. 

And just like that, you’re someone who meditates! Easy peasy.  Turn this into a regular, or dare I say it, even daily, practice, and you’re on your way to becoming the embodiment of tranquility with nary a ruffled feather to be found!
